Zakariyah Philander

EDUCATIONIST, ISLAMIC SCHOLAR AND IMAM

Zakariyah Philander is a scholar of Islam, an educationist and an Imam. His passion for the Qur’an comes through in the many years he spent teaching aspects of it at various levels. Though adept at both traditional and critical Islamic discourse, he does not shy away from teaching the basics of reading and understanding the Qur’an. He was a teacher at Islamia, then a lecturer at Darun Naim, and tutored in the Study of Islam honors program at UJ. He served as the Director of the Discover Islam Centre and as the Vice Principal at Radhwa American International School in Yanbu, KSA. As an Imam he served the communities of Wynberg, Retreat, and Mitchelsplain in Cape Town.

Course: Coming of age in Islam

Throughout the world people of various traditions and cultures acknowledge coming of age. The acknowledgment usually involves some type of ceremony or action that announces a young person to the world. It serves as a bridge that leads the child into maturity. Guiding young people at this important stage in their lives helps them make sense of the world around them and aids them in taking their role as confident individuals in society.

Modern culture has robbed many young people of this valuable transition into adulthood. Thus, we find more and more young people confused about their role in society and struggling to find themselves.

This series of 6 online lectures will be ideally suited for young people. It will look at how Islam has created a bridge from youth into adulthood that allows for the complete growth of the individual. The topics are relevant, relating to coming of age, and are couched in the rich practical and spiritual tradition of Islam.

Topics that will be addressed include:

Qur'an and Hadith on the topic of youth.

What does it mean to be Mukallaf?

Why does practicing Islam seem difficult?

On being a confident individual

What is the meaning of friendship?

Can I have a girlfriend/boyfriend?

When is a guy/girl marriage material?

On being a Muslim.

Relating to one's parents.
